The medical team is divided into the following:
Becoming a member
To join, you must first fill out an application, based on which the applicant's suitability as a candidate for the Estonian Rescue Team Medical Unit (EDRT) will be assessed. If the application is approved, the applicant will be considered a candidate and the membership process will begin. To submit an application, the following documents and materials must be submitted to the email address: info@estemt.ee
1. Application
To apply, send us a brief introduction explaining why you want to join, and be sure to include your CV. Send the necessary information to info@estemt.ee
Application requirements:
- The candidate must not have any valid criminal record.
- Doctors, nurses, and ambulance, radiology, and emergency medical technicians must have at least a relevant field education. For other roles (e.g. logistics), the education requirement is not mandatory - ask for more information about suitability by email.
2. Submitting the application
After submitting your application, additional forms will be sent to your email address, which you are asked to complete by the specified deadline. Required documents include:
- Fill out the form with your personal and professional information (the form will be sent by email).
- Copies of your passport and vaccination certificate (in image or PDF format).
- Certificate of completion for the BSAFE e-course (security certificate), which can be obtained after successfully completing the course. You can find the e-course here.

3. Participation in Basic Training
The basic training is a two-day course designed to prepare candidates for the tasks of the EDRT Medical Unit both in Estonia and on international missions. During the course:
- A comprehensive overview of EDRT's structure, operations, and goals is provided.
- The principles of crisis management and disaster medicine are taught.
- Teamwork skills are practiced, and emergency response actions are rehearsed.
The dates and location of the course will be announced to candidates in advance. The basic course will be conducted by lecturers from the Estonian National Security Academy in cooperation with the Estonian Rescue Board and the Estonian Health Board.
4. Practical Training - National or International Exercise
After the basic course, candidates participate in practical training to assess their readiness and skills. Upon successful completion of the exercise, candidates are officially accepted as members of the Estonian Disaster Response Team Medical Unit (EST-EMT).
6. Confirmation of Membership
Once the candidate has successfully completed the basic course and the exercise, they are officially accepted as a unit member.
- Candidates who successfully complete the exercise are officially confirmed as EST-EMT members.
- The Regional Hospital enters into a service agreement with the member, governing their participation in missions. Note: Both candidates and members will sign a service agreement with the Regional Hospital.
6. After Membership Confirmation, Members Are Expected To:
- Maintain readiness: Each member must ensure readiness to respond to a mission or exercise call within the time specified in the call notifications (e.g. via SMS or email). Typically within 24–72 hours, so that the team is operationally ready to act if necessary.
- Participate in team activities: Members are encouraged to actively participate in regular training sessions and exercises, held both nationally and internationally. These ensure the maintenance and development of necessary skills and continuous professional readiness to act in crisis situations.
- Arrange agreements with employers: After membership confirmation, members are expected to begin arranging agreements with their employers. Before embarking on a mission, each member must independently ensure that clear and supportive conditions for mission participation have been established with their employer. Although this process may take time, it is a crucial step to ensure smooth and hassle-free readiness.
