EDRT Medical Team

Our main goal is to provide medical assistance following disasters and major accidents both within Estonia and abroad.

The irreplaceable value of the unit is its sense of mission, because all the people involved in it work on a voluntary basis and their main jobs are in various healthcare institutions in Estonia. The Disaster Medicine Unit was formed on the basis of the Medical Group of the Estonian Rescue Team, which was previously part of the Rescue Board. The Disaster Medicine Unit is responsible for the administration and coordination of the Medical Group of the Estonian Rescue Team. The Medical Group of the Estonian Rescue Team has previously participated as a team in missions in Indonesia (2004/2005) and Pakistan (2005) and as experts in Haiti (2008).

At WHO level, medical teams are classified into five different types: mobile type 1 with emergency care capabilities and fixed type 1 (EMT-1). Type 2 with surgical and intensive care capabilities (EMT-2) is used to cope with larger and more complex patient flows.

The Medical Group of the Estonian Rescue Team is part of the Estonian Rescue Team, which is part of the rescue and crisis management training, education and preparation system.

The medical team is divided into the following:

ED
The ED Unit has 5 tents that can serve up to 150 patients per day. Each tent is staffed with at least 3 doctors and 6 nurses, plus a radiology technician, registrar, and paramedics.
Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit
The unit has three intensive care beds and one post-operative monitoring bed, all with invasive patient monitoring capabilities. The equipment includes four ventilators, aspirators and monitors, and one defibrillator. The team consists of at least three doctors and six nurses, ensuring 24/7 anesthesia capacity.
Surgery unit + sterilization
The unit can perform up to 7 major or 15 minor surgeries in 24 hours, ensuring the presence of at least three doctors and four nurses. Two large sterilizers are used for sterilization, which also serve the need for cleaning instruments in other modules.
General or Ward Unit
The unit's ward has 21 beds and is equipped to receive pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, and infectious disease patients. In addition, the capacity of a physiotherapist is available, ensuring versatile and specific care.
General Logistics Unit
The General Logistics Unit handles water purification, hygiene, kitchen, communications, and the construction of the base camp and field hospital.
