"The doctors were standing there, the patient's abdomen was open, and we just waited. There was a boom, we listened for a bit, the windows shook, and then we carried on working," Uljana Šatalov described. Estonian nurses Uljana Šatalov and Jana Reikop, who visited Ukraine in August, saw up close how the war has changed both everyday hospital life and the injuries patients come in with.
In August, Uljana Šatalov and Jana Reikop, both nurses at the North Estonia Medical Centre (PERH) and members of the medical unit of the Estonian rescue team, travelled to Ukraine to see how medics and hospitals operate in wartime conditions.
The mission was organised by the Health Emergency Situations Centre of the Lithuanian Ministry of Health, which coordinates the preparedness and response of the national healthcare system in crisis situations. This was the first time all three Baltic states were included in the cooperation; previously, only Lithuanians had taken part in the project.
